Jamf Parent is an application that allows you to manage your child's College-issued iPad. The Jamf Parent app allows you to restrict and allow apps and functionality on your child's iPad wirelessly.

Before proceeding, you will need the Jamf Parent app linked to your child's iPads. Please follow the video tutorial below to link your app.

Allowing and Restricting Apps

Jamf Parent allows you to choose which apps your child can use on their College-issued iPad.

You can allow and restrict apps on your child's iPad by tapping the child iPad you want to restrict and then tapping the "Restrictions" tab.

You can either restrict apps by category or by specific apps. To restrict apps by category, use the switches under 'Allowed App Categories'.

To restrict specific apps, tap "Restrict Device Functionality" and use the switches next to each app.

Enabling App Lock

You can use App Lock to set a timer for app restrictions.

While your child's iPad is in App Lock, they will only be able to use the apps you allow during the specified time period. If you only allow one app, that app launches on your child's iPad and they cannot exit the app until the App Lock timer expires.

1. From the dashboard, tap the child iPad you want to restrict.

2. Tap the "Restrictions" tab.

3. Tap "Enable App Lock" and set the timer, then select the apps you want your child to have access to.

Setting Locations

You can use the Locations feature to see the approximate location of your child's iPad and set Device Rules based on the location.

You can view the location of your child's iPad by tapping their profile icon from the dashboard and then tapping the "Locations" tab.

1. In Jamf Parent, tap "Locations".

2. Tap the child's iPad you want to configure a location for, then tap "Create location".

3. Enter a name for the location.

4. Set the Radius of the location. The radius determines how far your child's iPad can be from the location and still report as being at that location.

5. Use the on-screen map to select the location, then tap "Save"

Setting Device Rules

You can use the Device Rules feature to schedule app restrictions on your child's device. This allows you to schedule homework time or bedtime.

The types of Device Rules include the following:

  • Ad-hoc, where a Device Rule can be temporarily activated
  • Locations where a Device Rule should be active
  • Motions that should activate a Device Rule
  • Days and times a Device Rule should be active

In Jamf Parent, choose the child iPad you want to configure the Device Rule for.

1. Tap the "Device Rules" tab, then "Create Device Rules".

2. Select the type of Device Rule you want to set.

3. If you selected "Location", select the locations where this Device Rule should be active, then tap "Next".

4. If you selected "Motion", enable the motions that should activate this Device Rule, then tap Next.

5. Select the category of apps you want to restrict, then tap "Next".

6. Select the specific apps you want to allow, then tap "Done".

7. Tap "Add a Website" to select the websites you want to allow, then tap "Next".

8. Select which days and times the Device Rule should be active, then tap "Next". Alternatively, you can enable "Always" to activate the Device Rule during non-College hours.

9. Enter a name for the Device Rule, then tap "Save".

You can delete a Device Rule by swiping left on the Device Rule name.

Removing your Child's iPad from Jamf Parent

By removing your child's iPad from Jamf Parent, you will no longer be able to manage their College-issued iPad. To do this, tap the Settings icon in the top-right corner of the screen, then tap "Remove" under 'Account'.

It is recommended to lock the Jamf Parent app to prevent your child from modifying the settings. On an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, navigate to your home screen, then tap and hold the Jamf Parent app icon. Select either "Require Face ID" or "Require Touch ID" to lock the app.
